Mellott -- Jacob J. Austin, 86, resident of Mellott for nearly 20 years, died in his home at 11:25 p.m. Tuesday. He had been in failing health for the last few years. Austin worked as a laborer most of his life. Austin was born May 19, 1876, in Harden County, Ky. His parents were Baylis F. and Sophia Triplett Austin. He was married to Agnes Williams on Feb. 7, 1900, in Elizabethtown, Ky. He was a member of a Baptist Church in Kentucky. Survivors include his wife; seven sons, John Austin of Linden, Cecil Austin of Pittsboro, Wayne Austin of Indianapolis, Carrell Austin of Crawfordsville and Russell Austin, Chester Austin and Stanley Austin of Mellott; a daughter, Alta Connell of Crawfordsville; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was the last of six children in his family. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Crumley Funeral Home at Hillsboro. Rev. George Phelps will officiate. Burial will be in the Meharry Cemetery in Wingate. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday afternoon and night.
